Awardee: Dr Rhonika Thomas

Dr. Rhonika Thomas, affectionately known as Dr. Rho, is a trailblazing figure in the world of nonprofit development and management, celebrated for her innovative initiatives and over two decades of dedicated service. Born to make an impact, Dr. Rho has forged an impressive educational journey, holding a Bachelor’s of Arts in Mass Communications, a Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling, and a Doctoral Degree in Counseling Psychology.

As a proud mother of three beautiful children—Malachi, Raya, and Rylee—and relishing the title Gran Gran to Baby Pierre, Dr. Rho seamlessly balances her professional achievements with her role as a nurturing matriarch.

Dr. Rho’s legacy in the nonprofit sector began in 2017, with the creation of the Bridge the Gap International Program. This signature initiative has taken over 30 nonprofit leaders on transformative journeys to countries such as Tanzania, Dubai, Nigeria, Brazil, and Argentina, expanding their reach and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

She further solidified her impact in 2021 when she founded Blacks in Nonprofits, the world’s largest platform for Black-led nonprofit leaders and Black business providers. This platform, with its online membership base, has become a historic space for connection and networking.

In 2023, Dr. Rho emerged as the visionary force behind the Nonprofit Flex Network, a groundbreaking initiative designed to unite leaders in the nonprofit sector. Under her guidance, Nonprofit Flex has evolved into an unparalleled hub, hosting several powerhouse communities. Notable among these are Blacks in Nonprofits, boasting a membership of over 28,000; Nonprofit Newbies, with a thriving community of over 4,000 members; AI for Nonprofits, engaging over 400 members; and Puerto Ricans in Nonprofits, a vibrant community of over 56,000 members. Through Nonprofit Flex, Dr. Rho facilitates an annual conference, online resources, empowerment, and invaluable networking opportunities for each of these communities.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Rho finds joy in her free time through her love for travel, relaxation in the hot tub, attendance at R&B concerts, and the art of culinary expression. Her multifaceted contributions, both professionally and personally, make Dr. Rhonika Thomas an inspirational figure, shaping the landscape of nonprofit leadership and community engagement.
