Living Legend, Dr. Bernardine M. Lacey, Takes A Stand as the Keynote Speaker for the Delaware Healthcare Symposium in May

“Take A Stand: The Future of Healthcare Begins With You”

The ‘Take A Stand” campaign is a platform that brings together community members, leaders and legislators to discuss common unspoken issues affecting our communities and come up with possible solutions.

In May, we will particularly address how these issues are affecting the Healthcare Industry while offering self-help tools, preventive mechanisms and possible solutions. We are bringing together healthcare leaders, innovators and healthcare professionals to address Workplace Violence/Discrimination, Mental Health Issues, Diversity and Inclusion in the healthcare industry and the impact of Long Work Hours on staff and quality of care. 

Bernardine M. Lacey, RN, Ed.D, FAAN  is a nurse, nurse educator, and a much sought- after speaker. She earned her diploma in Nursing from the Gilfoy School of Nursing, Mississippi Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS; her BSN from Georgetown University in Washington, DC; her MA from Howard University and her Doctor of Education Degree from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York, NY.

Her reputation as a nurse and nurse educator is unmatched in the nursing profession. Dr. Lacey has held many positions in nursing from the bedside to the boardroom. She has served in many institutions including; Howard University, Western Michigan University, Prince Georges Community College, Children’s National Medical Center, Bowie State University, and Delaware State University.

A much sought-after speaker, Dr. Lacey has conducted workshops, seminars and presented many speeches for various professional and civic organizations, schools and churches throughout the United States and internationally in Africa, China, South Korea, Mexico and the Dominion Republic. Her work has been presented and documented in a number of local and national radio and television programs and publications.

Dr. Lacey was an advisor to President Clinton’s Task Force on Health Care Reform and a member of Clinton / Gore Transition Team Task Force on Health Care Delivery. Her many publications convey the message that she is a woman of compassion and commitment who cares for students at prestigious universities as well as homeless people in the street.

Among her most prestigious honors and recognition, in October 2014, Dr. Lacey was inducted as a “LIVING LEGEND” BY THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NURSING. This is the Academy’s highest honor. Upon her retirement from Western Michigan University, two generous donors awarded the University $1.5 million to establish an endowed Chair to be named the Dr. Bernardine M. Lacey Endowed Chair in Community Health Nursing. In addition, her most recent awards include the Legacy of Leadership Award from Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC; and Professor of the Year, Greek System Award from Western Michigan University.

Dr. Lacey is married to Dr. Wilbert Lacey (retired) from Howard University as psychiatrist for the Howard University Counseling Center. She is the mother of three adult children, two adult grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
